$1 Million Boost for Tarawera and Ōkataina Track and Campground Upgrades

Conservation Minister Tama Potaka announced a $1 million investment from the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy to upgrade over 22 kilometers of tracks and three campgrounds around Tarawera and Ōkataina, including reopening the Eastern Ōkataina Walkway. The upgrades will enhance visitor facilities, address safety issues from a 2021 rockfall, and support biodiversity efforts like wallaby control, with involvement from local iwi and community groups. This funding highlights the need for conservation legislation reform to streamline infrastructure improvements while maintaining environmental protections.
