Government to Retain and Adjust New Zealand's Clean Vehicle Standard by 2028

The Government will retain the Clean Vehicle Standard, which sets emissions targets for new and used vehicle imports, after a review confirmed it as the most cost-effective way to increase lower-emissions vehicles in New Zealand. The Standard’s settings will be recalibrated to be realistic and achievable, with different targets introduced for used vehicle imports due to their older technology. Officials will engage with the vehicle industry and report back early next year to establish new targets effective from January 2028.
