Government Boosts Maternity Care with Longer Postnatal Stays and More Support

The New Zealand Government is investing $34.4 million over four years to increase maternity bed capacity and staff, enabling mothers and babies to have up to a three-day postnatal hospital stay. This funding supports the implementation of the Three Day Postnatal Stay Amendment Bill, which will legally entitle mothers to a minimum three-day stay after childbirth to ensure adequate recovery and bonding time. Health Ministers emphasize that this initiative responds to women’s needs, aiming to improve early postnatal care and outcomes for families and the health system.
