Nearly 200 Schools Replace Open-Plan Classrooms with Quieter Learning Spaces

Nearly 200 schools have started replacing open-plan classrooms with enclosed spaces to create quieter, calmer learning environments, following concerns from teachers and parents. The Ministry of Education launched the Modifying Open Plan Classrooms Initiative in 2025, completing assessments for 46 schools and finishing modifications at six, with positive feedback highlighting reduced noise, fewer distractions, and better support for neurodiverse learners. Additionally, the Ministry has ceased funding new open-plan classroom developments, aiming to have at least 38 schools modified by the end of the year.
