The New Zealand Government has opened public consultation on two packages of transport rule changes aimed at improving everyday travel safety and reducing regulatory burdens for truck operators. Key proposals include allowing children up to 12 to ride bikes on footpaths, mandating safe passing distances for cyclists and horse riders, permitting e-scooters in cycle lanes, and easing heavy vehicle permit requirements while supporting low-emission vehicle transitions. New Zealand Vintage Vehicles & Private Motorhomes Shift to Annual Inspections from Sept 1

7 months ago | 2021 views

Starting from 1 September, vintage light vehicles and private heavy motorhomes in New Zealand will transition from six-monthly to annual vehicle inspections, as announced by Transport Minister Chris Bishop. This change aims to reduce bureaucracy for the approximately 128,000 vintage vehicles and 39,000 private motorhomes registered in the country, as these vehicles are less likely to have faults contributing to serious crashes compared to modern cars. Public support for this change was overwhelmingly positive, with 89% in favor of annual inspections for private heavy motorhomes and 98% for vintage light vehicles.

Taking the handbrake off productivity through transport rule reform

9 months ago | 1424 views

The Government is progressing a bold work programme to increase productivity and efficiency through comprehensively reforming New Zealand’s land transport rules, Transport Minister Chris Bishop says. “Land transport rules set out how different sectors of the transport industry must operate. They impact all road users - from the suburban mum or dad who has to get a Warrant of Fitness every year no matter how new or well-maintained their car, to the truckies who’ve been loaded up with compliance costs due to rules long since made redundant through advances in technology,” says Mr Bishop.
