New National ID Card Enhances Access for Disabled People with Service Dogs

A new national ID card for certified disability assistance dog teams will help disabled people access public places, businesses, and transport by reducing misunderstandings and challenges about their legal rights. The card, developed by experts and funded by the Ministry of Disabled People – Whaikaha, does not change existing access rights but provides a standardized, recognizable form of identification to support handlers and their service dogs. Its rollout, expected to take about three months, aims to enhance independence and remove barriers for disabled New Zealanders relying on service dogs.
