New Weather Radar Selected for Nelson Tasman to Boost Flood Preparedness

A new weather radar site near Drumduan’s Horoirangi Peak has been selected to improve timely and accurate weather information for Nelson Tasman, addressing the region's limited radar coverage. Funded with up to $5 million by the government and expected to be operational by mid-2027, the radar will use advanced Doppler dual-polarisation technology to enhance rainfall estimates and weather monitoring. This initiative aims to strengthen New Zealand’s resilience to severe weather, aiding emergency management, councils, and communities in better preparing for and responding to disasters.

Government Funds New Nelson Tasman Weather Radar for Enhanced Emergency Response

The Government is funding MetService for a new Nelson Tasman weather radar to enhance severe weather monitoring and response in the region, as announced by Associate Transport Minister James Meager. The radar procurement aims to improve community preparedness for future disasters following recent severe weather events. The investment in the radar, with a capital cost of up to $5 million and ongoing operating costs, will provide emergency managers with better tools to monitor rainfall and flooding risks, ultimately reducing the potential for loss of life and property during severe weather events.
