Initial teacher education enrolments in New Zealand have increased by 40 percent since 2023, rising from 3,190 to 4,455 in 2026, reflecting a growing interest among Kiwis to join the teaching workforce. The government has expanded initiatives like the School Onsite Training Programme, offering financial incentives and more training places, especially in secondary teaching where demand is highest. Alongside increasing enrolments, efforts to improve teacher retention, curriculum quality, and professional development aim to build a strong, world-leading education system centered on great teaching.
