Hauraki Gulf Shellfish Harvest Ban Extended for Two More Years to Protect Fisheries

A two-year extension has been granted for shellfish harvesting bans at Umupuia Beach, Te Mātā and Waipatukahu, and Waiheke Island in the Hauraki Gulf, requested by local iwi groups to help replenish marine resources. These closures support the Pou Rāhui Research Project, which combines mātauranga Māori and scientific methods to restore important species and train whānau in sustainable practices.
